Is the Optic Disc ‘Sinking’ or ‘Cupping’ in Glaucoma?
نویسنده
چکیده
In 1851, the introduction of the ophthalmoscope by Von Helmholtz revolutionized ophthalmology. With the ophthalmoscope, Von Graefe and others at the time were the first to visualize the optic disc of blind patients in whom the eyeballs were firm but noncongested. They classified this condition as simple glaucoma and labeled the appearance of the optic disc as ‘cupped’. Since then, the term ‘cupping’ became synonymous with chronic glaucoma. This article will present why the terms ‘cupping’ and cup/disc ratio of the optic disc may be incorrectly associated with glaucoma.

Purpose: To report a case of unilateral severe visual loss and bilateral optic disc cupping secondary to brain metastasis of bronchogenic carcinoma Patient and findings: A 48 year-old woman presented with severe visual loss of left eye without redness or pain or any systemic findings .Clinical findings included decreased visual acuity of left eye to 4 m CF and (+3) positive Marcus-Gunn refle...
متن کاملQuantitative relationship between cupping of the optic disc and visual field loss in chronic simple glaucoma.
The extent of cupping was measured from optic disc photographs of 300 patients with ocular hypertension and suspected or established chronic simple glaucoma, and their visual fields were recorded. The incidence of field defects increased as the vertical cup:disc ratio increased, a value of 0-70 for this ratio being a particularly useful guide to the presence or absence of field loss. There was ...

PURPOSE The mechanism of cupping reversal seen after lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in pediatric glaucoma is unknown. Theories include forward movement of the lamina cribrosa or shrinkage of a stretched scleral canal. Our study aimed to quantify changes in optic disc size occurring in children who had undergone glaucoma surgery. DESIGN Retrospective, single-center, observational case ser...
متن کاملClinical characteristics of nonglaucomatous optic disc cupping
Pathological optic disc cupping (ODC) is predominantly referred to as glaucoma; however, it is not only glaucoma that leads to pathological optic disc excavation. A number of other nonglaucomatous diseases also result in optic atrophy and excavation of the optic disc. Therefore, in the present study, the etiology of nonglaucomatous optic disc cupping (NGODC) was analyzed and differentiated from...
متن کاملEvaluation of Retinal Optic Disc Segmentation in Patients with Glaucoma and Comparison with Other Methods of Medical Image Processing
Introduction: Glaucoma is the most common cause of blindness in some countries. In the meantime, the field of retinal image processing has been proposed in order to provide automatic systems for disease diagnosis. Among the methods of medical image processing, image segmentation is a process of identification and change in the display of an image. The objective of this study was to use t...
